Today is May Day! Here at LRM Interior Design, we’ve decided to celebrate it with an Inspiration piece on outdoor furniture. Yep, it’s that time of year. Our executive administrator Kristen Rusert was the one to bring up the patio furniture, and wanted to help our readers find the most stylish—and most affordable—items for your outdoor area.
“I chose this inspiration topic for two reasons: the changing of the season and the economic climate,” says Kristen. “We’re Southern California residents, as are most of our clients, and that means we look forward to summer as the time for relaxing outside in the sunshine.”

This week, our “Inspiration” is to help you – to share the LRM Interior Design team’s collective expertise about the dos and don’ts of interior design. It’s true that design professionals make it look easy. We transform a drab room into something amazing with what seems like a few throw pillows and a new shade of paint on the walls.
But there’s a reason we took the time to go to interior design school, and, as with any type of creative industry or artistic pursuit, there is a certain amount of talent needed to be successful.
So it’s not as easy as it looks. We slave over color choice, we agonize over which chair would work best and we’ve arranged and rearranged everything in that room in our minds and on paper so many times it’s exhausting. (read the rest of this post…)

The first quarter of 2009 has been positive for LRM Interior Design, considered among the top design studios of Orange County, California. Live Edge Design
This week’s Inspiration comes from LRM Interior Design’s Head Designer Jan Smith, who has become enchanted with the forest – Live Edge Design’s unhewn furniture, that is. “What I liked most about the company was that they use reclaimed wood found during storms or left behind by big forest companies,” comments Jan. The company, located on Vancouver Island, B.C., says that their favorite tree to salvage is the Western Bigleaf Maple, as it has “exceptional colour and figure.” The company’s web site describes how tree growth happens beneath the bark, and by retaining the “live” edge it gives a sculptural quality to their furniture. Filigreed door hardware from H. Theophile
The LRM Inspiration this week is cabinetry and door hardware by H. Theophile, and chosen by designer Hillary Nichols. According to Hillary, selecting hardware for cabinets and doors can be difficult even for professionals, especially when you find many manufacturers with similar designs.
“We always want to infuse interesting and unique details when designing beautiful rooms,” explains Hillary. “Hardware for cabinets and doors can be a great way to bring these details in.” (read the rest of this post…)

I was so happy to be able to make Trina Turk’s talk at the Laguna Design Center’s West Week. I was even happier to find out that David Dalton was joining her! I wanted to share some of the important points I picked up from them, as I was inspired and excited by hearing about their rise to fame:
Trina feels that the Elle Décor spread featuring her home launched her into the spotlight, and gave her the most publicity and feedback she’s ever received. As for David Dalton, his collaboration with another type of artist – the singer Meatloaf – proved enjoyable and promotional: Meatloaf’s redesigned home was featured in Architectural Digest. Dalton’s own home was featured in Western Interiors, Loft, Dwell, Shelter and Angelino magazines, which helped propel him into the public eye. Dalton spoke of how easy it was to design – the empty space itself was unbelievably inspiring! (read the rest of this post…)

The LRM Inspiration this week has been chosen by Jan Smith, our Senior Designer. Jan is in love with all things Asian at the moment, and has fallen for The Opposite House, a luxury boutique hotel in the diplomatic quarter of Beijing, China.
