This redwood floor is in the dining room of one of Carroll Avenue's beautifully restored Victorians in Los Angeles, though the stenciling technique would work well in more contemporary homes, too.
This week we’d like to introduce LRM Interior Design’s Stacy Shawver, our Administrative Assistant. And just because she’s busy keeping the office organized and tip-top doesn’t mean she’s not interested in interior design!
Stacy’s inspiration for this week was painted floors—but not just any painted floors. She was inspired by painted floors with a little extra.
“Instead of just rolling on a coat of paint to any floor, this image shows that you can add life to a dull floor with a pattern,” says Stacy. “You can liven up any bare floor with some paint and a stencil!”
Stencil on a painted “area rug” or just edge the room with a stenciled pattern. What about a stenciled runner in a hallway instead of paint? Don’t rule out the outdoors either. Stenciling would be a great way to brighten patios, decks or concrete walkways.

Susan Bradley's Outdoor Wallpaper
Usually designers are known for “bringing the outdoors inside,” such as Billy Baldwin, mentioned in our last blog. But now the trend is to bring the inside outdoors.
Southern California is famous for its beautiful, year-round weather, and as much as we hate to brag, we have to deal with it as designers. With outdoor kitchens and areas for entertaining, interior design no longer stops at the door’s threshold. LRM Interior Design’s Kari Seydewitz saw Susan Bradley’s innovative idea for “outdoor wallpaper,” and thought it would be a great addition to a Southern California designer’s repetoire.
Think of a backyard area with a cluster of seating, tucked up against the home’s exterior wall. Painting the wall a color to complement the furniture is a great idea, but what else can be done? A mural is not always the answer. Using this outdoor wallpaper can add something special, as it can be used as a trellis or just as an interesting form of decoration to draw the eye.
Susan Bradley offers several damask-style designs, a beautiful design based on the Japanese cherry blossom, a very modern vine pattern and a large paisley print—all available in different colors and finishes. The company is in the United Kingdom, so be warned: the prices are in U.K. Sterling, but they are happy to ship overseas to the U.S.

Southern California Coastal Property Bedroom
“Everything in a bedroom should contribute to an atmosphere of peace.”
-Billy Baldwin
This week Kristen Rusert was inspired by this quote by Billy Baldwin – and if you’re reading this blog, you’ll know we’re speaking not of the actor, but of the legendary American interior designer. Baldwin was credited with defining American interior design from the European sensibility, and counted Jackie O, Cole Porter and Diane Vreeland as clients. Truly, Baldwin was one of our country’s masters of interiors.
So if Billy Baldwin gives advice about a room, it would be advantageous to listen. Especially this quote, which does not recommend or dictate a particular style, feature or color scheme, but rather encourages the designer to focus on how the client will feel when living in the space.
“This bedroom is one of my favorite designs that LRM Interior Design has created,” says Kristen. “I believe that, with its light walls, cool fabrics and serene ocean view, it embodies the essence of peace.”
One of LRMID’s specialties is designing for homes on California’s south coast and creating spaces that work with the region’s unique light as it changes through the day.

We at Lisa Rachelle McDennon Interior Design are happy to report that we are online in more places than one.
Check out our updated ASID Orange County profile, where you can see some photos of our recent projects and read up on Lisa’s biography. We value being a member of the American Society of Interior Designers, as it is a wonderful resource for interior designers, industry vendors and associates, but most importantly, it’s a great guide for consumers. Choosing a designer who is registered with ASID will ensure you’ve signed up with a talented, qualified professional.
Plus, you can review us on Yelp.com! It’s not just for restaurant reviews, you know. We look forward to being reviewed by real people who have dealt with us first-hand.
Keep reading our blog for more news about Lisa Rachelle McDennon and her talented design team!
