How To Add A Little Romance to Your Home For Valentine’s Day

February 14th, 2011 by jennifermyers

Aah, love is in the air! It’s Valentine’s Day! The LRM Interior Design team is all ladies, and believe us, we know how to get the romance going. So what are a few simple things you can do around the home to set the mood? Read on for our top tips on creating an aura of romance for February’s Day of Love. And remember—use these any day of the year to give your significant other a special dose of lovin’!

Buy the flowers you want for Valentine's Day to create romance.

1. Fresh flowers: Even though this is supposed to be the man’s job to bring home on Valentine’s Day, we say buy some for yourself, even a few days before when they won’t be so expensive. “Fresh flowers are probably the easiest way to instantly add romance to your home,” says design assistant Melissa Morgan. “There is something that fresh, living flowers can do to your spirits that nothing else can.” And don’t just go for red roses! Other warm colors, like shell pink and magenta, also add the romance to a bouquet, and some variety in flower choices. Another suggestion: the cool white of a single orchid plant can be a beautiful token of love.

2. Decadent bathtime: What’s better than going to the spa? Bringing the spa home, of course! Especially when you set the scene for your loved one. And don’t just wait til February 14th for this treat, says Senior Designer Jan Smith: “Nothing says romance like a spa-like bathroom. Just add flowers, candles and champagne for an amazing Valentine’s Day, birthday or anniversary experience. If your bathroom is not as spectacular as you wish it to be, have LRM Interior Design create the ultimate romantic retreat that guarantees romance all year long.”

3. Let’s Go Outside: There’s a reason that lovers go for sunset walks on the beach (and it’s not just because everyone looks amazing in that warm sunset glow). It’s because enjoying the beauty of the day’s end is a wonderful visual treat to share. What if you’re not near the beach? No problem. “Nothing is more romantic then a well-designed, private outdoor lounge area—especially in Southern California where we are blessed with gorgeous weather,” project manager Kristen Rusert insists. “Add lounge chairs, flowing fabric and some candlelight to your space and voila!” Voila indeed—what a wonderful way to canoodle with the one you love, all year round.

What's your definition of "romantic", asks Keri Seydewitz.

4. It’s Personal: “Adding romance to the home can be done so many ways,” explains Kari Seydewitz. “Romance can be soft dramatic draperies, it can be a fresh bouquet of flowers, it can be masculine, it can be a sense of coziness and warmth.  I believe there is no one definition of a romantic interior—romance can be many things no matter what your style.” And the team at LRM Interior Design agrees. After all, our motto is “Your taste, our touch.” We pride ourselves on listening to our clients and providing them with what they want, not our style forced upon them. As Kari points out so succinctly: romance can mean something different to everyone, and we take that to heart every time we discuss a project with a client.

This elevation by Melissa Morgan shows how romance can be in the details.

5. It’s in the Detail: It’s not just what you buy to add to your home; romance can be built into the very design. Adding decorative moldings to a room, especially a bedroom, is a beautiful way to add romance to your home. ” I absolutely love this look,” says Melissa Morgan of her elevation, pictured. “It reminds me of old European homes and pied-a-terres—and let’s face it, Europe knows what they’re doing when it comes to romance.” This elevation represents a design LRMID just created for one of our “Design-in-a-Box” clients, a young couple looking for a bedroom where they can spend quality time together. Good design is not just for Christmas! (Or Valentine’s Day.) It’s a year-round love fest!

6. Slip Into Something More Comfortable: “Nothing is more romantic than slipping into luxurious bedding!” says our lovely leader, Lisa McDennon. “The next best thing is stepping out of a romantic bath and enveloping yourself in a large, extremely soft and absorbent towel.” Yes, there are towels out there that are deliciously soft and actually dry you off without feeling like sandpaper after the third wash! In the next few weeks, LRM Interior Design will be offering the linen and bedding lines of Sferra and Matouk, who provide the most amazing sheets, coverlets, duvets, shams, blankets, towels and robes. These are products to go crazy for, especially when you look at the specialty embroidered sheet sets. Plus they offer custom monogramming on towels and robes!
