Just try to get us out of this Missoni deck chair!
Ah, Missoni. The name itself sounds like a breezy, beautiful day on the Italian coast, perhaps in Amalfi. With Dolce & Gabbana sunglasses to block out the sun bouncing off the Mediteranean, the wind stirs the multi-colored folds of our Missoni dress…
Okay, so perhaps not everyone has dreamt that dream, but if you love the fashion of Missoni as much as we do, you’ll love Kristen Rusert’s inspiration for this week.
Missoni has taken their trademark knitted weaves and put them on outdoor furniture. Yes, it’s true! Missoni teamed up with T&J Vestor in 1983 to start the home line, which has continued to expand over the years, to great success. And no wonder! Who wouldn’t want to have these sleek, colorful pieces of furniture gracing their outdoor living area? Our only worry is that every guest would be green with envy…

A stunning example of mid-century modern architecture.
Spring has been quite a wet season, especially by our Southern California standards. But our opinion is that it will just provide a lush summer for our enjoyment. Here in Laguna Beach, we can tell that there’s been a lot of rain, and not just by the unusually lush hillsides, but that the goats have arrived a bit early this year. Yes, we said “goats”. They are our ecologically friendly way of ridding the beautiful Laguna hillsides of the excess vegetation. Plus, they are adorable!
But we digress. Although the spring hasn’t provided the best weather for us to enjoy the outdoors, we know that summer is just around the corner, and it’s sure to bring us some beautiful sunshine. And when the sun is shining, the locals of Southern California play, entertain and relax. And what better place to do so than in a stunning outdoor living space—in your own home? We love creating custom designs to embroider on fabric.
Do you ever wonder how interior designers always seem to find the perfect fabric for the project? How the drapes just seem to be created by magic, and the pillows and shams on a bed look absolutely made for the bed?
It’s not really magic, although we’d like you to think so. We’ll say it again: the entire staff at LRM Interior Design is obsessed with every detail. That means if we can’t find the perfect fabric for your curtains, or the perfect pillow for your bed, or the correctly sized cushion for your window seat, we make it. From scratch. One of the things we are allowed to do in our job is see a lot of what is behind closed doors in many clients’ homes. We’re not snooping, of course, but to find out what spaces can be used for, repurposed or remodeled, you need to see everything. And we’ve found that many people are what’s commonly known as “packrats” or “hoarders”.
And that’s not to say that much of what they’re hoarding needs to be thrown out, but if you’re not using these items, perhaps it’s because it’s packed so far back in a cupboard you forget about it. Or, you could be like Katherine Caporale, the newest member of the LRM Interior Design team, someone who was brought up to save the best items for special occasions. “I subconsciously incorporated my mother’s philosophy into my attitude towards my possessions,” Katherine explains. “For instance, my Christofle sterling silver sits waiting for a holiday to be admired. But this year’s spring cleaning will be a rebirth for all the lovely pieces that have been leading a cloistered existence in the china closet!”
And why don’t we all take Katherine’s lead? Clear out those items that you put in the cupboard to hide, and take out the beautiful items that should be admired by all who see it, every single day. Here’s some fantastic ideas on how to showcase those items, plus some refreshing spring ideas from our fearless leader, Lisa McDennon herself!

The perfect storage solution for a shoe collection
1. SHOES: Now, we know that there are ladies out there that like sensible shoes, and there’s nothing wrong with that. But let’s face it, whether they are sensible shoes or fabulous Manolo Blahniks, most of us girls are obsessed with our shoes. So why shut them away in the closet? We love this shoe storage tower with space for 18 pairs of shoes and six handbags. Lined with pale grey fabric that keeps shoes and handbags in great shape, the cubbies can be readjusted to hold boots or specially sized shoes or bags. I don’t know about you, but I’m looking for the “buy!” button! Just call the girls at LRM Interior Design and they can get you pricing: (949) 497-6806. (read the rest of this post…)

At LRM Interior Design, we love trees. Now, we’re not necessarily saying that we’re “treehuggers” or anything, but we’re fans. That said, it’s not always easy to include trees in interior design.
But, luckily trees share their bounty with us, as if every tree was The Giving Tree. They give up their sturdy, strong trunks and branches to be chopped, cut and otherwise transformed into many items that we use today, from paper, pencils, flooring, building materials—the list is endless.
But some of our favorite uses of wood are in the interior accessories category, allowing us to bring the organic feel of the outdoors indoors. A few of our top picks are listed below:

Munio wooden vases
1. Munio Vase: Fine wood items and water don’t sound like good bedfellows, but that’s if you think that only live flowers in water go in vases. In a word: no. Just the curvaceousness of these vases is enough to stop traffic; adding flowers would only detract from their singular beauty. These vases, made of wood from the rain forest with Forest Stewardship Council certification, come in three sizes and designs, ideal for single placement or a fantastic grouping. We like grouping items—when it’s done well, of course. Don’t worry, we can help. (read the rest of this post…)

Aah, love is in the air! It’s Valentine’s Day! The LRM Interior Design team is all ladies, and believe us, we know how to get the romance going. So what are a few simple things you can do around the home to set the mood? Read on for our top tips on creating an aura of romance for February’s Day of Love. And remember—use these any day of the year to give your significant other a special dose of lovin’!

Buy the flowers you want for Valentine's Day to create romance.
1. Fresh flowers: Even though this is supposed to be the man’s job to bring home on Valentine’s Day, we say buy some for yourself, even a few days before when they won’t be so expensive. “Fresh flowers are probably the easiest way to instantly add romance to your home,” says design assistant Melissa Morgan. “There is something that fresh, living flowers can do to your spirits that nothing else can.” And don’t just go for red roses! Other warm colors, like shell pink and magenta, also add the romance to a bouquet, and some variety in flower choices. Another suggestion: the cool white of a single orchid plant can be a beautiful token of love.

Candles, champagne and flowers set the mood in this romantic bathroom.
2. Decadent bathtime: What’s better than going to the spa? Bringing the spa home, of course! Especially when you set the scene for your loved one. And don’t just wait til February 14th for this treat, says Senior Designer Jan Smith: “Nothing says romance like a spa-like bathroom. Just add flowers, candles and champagne for an amazing Valentine’s Day, birthday or anniversary experience. If your bathroom is not as spectacular as you wish it to be, have LRM Interior Design create the ultimate romantic retreat that guarantees romance all year long.”

Enjoy the beauty of SoCal's scenery.
3. Let’s Go Outside: There’s a reason that lovers go for sunset walks on the beach (and it’s not just because everyone looks amazing in that warm sunset glow). It’s because enjoying the beauty of the day’s end is a wonderful visual treat to share. What if you’re not near the beach? No problem. “Nothing is more romantic then a well-designed, private outdoor lounge area—especially in Southern California where we are blessed with gorgeous weather,” project manager Kristen Rusert insists. “Add lounge chairs, flowing fabric and some candlelight to your space and voila!” Voila indeed—what a wonderful way to canoodle with the one you love, all year round.

What's your definition of "romantic", asks Keri Seydewitz.
4. It’s Personal: “Adding romance to the home can be done so many ways,” explains Kari Seydewitz. “Romance can be soft dramatic draperies, it can be a fresh bouquet of flowers, it can be masculine, it can be a sense of coziness and warmth. I believe there is no one definition of a romantic interior—romance can be many things no matter what your style.” And the team at LRM Interior Design agrees. After all, our motto is “Your taste, our touch.” We pride ourselves on listening to our clients and providing them with what they want, not our style forced upon them. As Kari points out so succinctly: romance can mean something different to everyone, and we take that to heart every time we discuss a project with a client.

This elevation by Melissa Morgan shows how romance can be in the details.
5. It’s in the Detail: It’s not just what you buy to add to your home; romance can be built into the very design. Adding decorative moldings to a room, especially a bedroom, is a beautiful way to add romance to your home. ” I absolutely love this look,” says Melissa Morgan of her elevation, pictured. “It reminds me of old European homes and pied-a-terres—and let’s face it, Europe knows what they’re doing when it comes to romance.” This elevation represents a design LRMID just created for one of our “Design-in-a-Box” clients, a young couple looking for a bedroom where they can spend quality time together. Good design is not just for Christmas! (Or Valentine’s Day.) It’s a year-round love fest!

Sink into the highest-quality bedsheets with Sferra bedding.
6. Slip Into Something More Comfortable: “Nothing is more romantic than slipping into luxurious bedding!” says our lovely leader, Lisa McDennon. “The next best thing is stepping out of a romantic bath and enveloping yourself in a large, extremely soft and absorbent towel.” Yes, there are towels out there that are deliciously soft and actually dry you off without feeling like sandpaper after the third wash! In the next few weeks, LRM Interior Design will be offering the linen and bedding lines of Sferra and Matouk, who provide the most amazing sheets, coverlets, duvets, shams, blankets, towels and robes. These are products to go crazy for, especially when you look at the specialty embroidered sheet sets. Plus they offer custom monogramming on towels and robes! Contact us to peruse our new library of beautiful bedding and towels, coming soon.
If you are looking for inspiration, Design-In-A-Box or our full-service design capabilities, don’t hesitate in giving LRM Interior Design a call for a free consultation. We love creating homes for our clients that foster well-being and positivity! (949) 497-6806

As we start the new year, and look forward to a bright and prosperous 2011, the team at LRM Interior Design presents some of the things they are inspired to do around their home. Even as we design and furnish the homes and offices of our clients, we are mentally thinking: “Would that look good in my house?” Which is quite fun, as we have access to some of the best and most unique home decor providers in the world. Yes, the world is literally our oyster…so if any of these ideas tickle your fancy, you know what to do. Give us a call so we can give you a new home in the new year!

An example of Jan's inspiration
Jan Smith, Senior Designer, is always focused on the client. Her inspiration is definitely one she takes home with her—everything at her home, from the spare room down to the dinner table, is thought through to the last detail. “In 2011, I want to emphasize the importance of completing the room design to our clients,” says Jan. “Paint, wallcoverings and furnishings will only give you part of the design story, not the full picture. It is essential to complete the room or home with soft goods and accessories. A finished look is a layered look, and at LRMID we stress the importance of those final touches, which include art, accessories, window treatments, accent rugs, portable lighting…the list is as long as the imagination!” (read the rest of this post…)

Today the weather outside in Southern California is frightful, but luckily inside it’s so delightful, thanks to some beautiful ideas on decorating your home that aren’t mass produced or seen on every street. What do we mean by that? Well, the best way is to clear your table, enlist family and/or friends, get the glue and pretty paper out, and get creating! But it could also just be getting away from the standard red and green colors for the holiday and mix it up a bit. Here’s some tips from Senior Designer Jan Smith and Design Assistant Melissa Morgan.

Mies van der Rohe's Farnsworth House in gingerbread
1. Gingerbread Modern Houses: You don’t need to throw tradition out the window; that’s not what we’re saying! But how about getting a little creative with the spiced-and-baked architecture? Gingerbread houses can easily be built from using a kit that you buy at the store, but that’s too easy. How about a gingerbread house inspired by Mies van der Rohe’s Farnsworth House? Before you think you need to be an Ace of Cakes—oh wait, yes you do. This one was created by April Reed Cake design and took over 25 hours to make! And you don’t even want to know how much it cost….but 15% of the proceeds went to the restoration project in the works for Farnsworth House when it was damaged in a flood a few years ago. Now the nights are drawing in, and there’s a nip in the air. Our thoughts turn to snuggling, and that can mean one thing: BED. We at LRM Interior Design love bedding that is so beautiful, soft and decadent that the first thing you think of when you wake up is getting back in to bed that night!
And without further ado, here’s our staff’s top picks:

Palmer by Niche Bedding
1. Palmer by Niche: Anyone who knows Senior Designer Jan Smith knows that her favorite colors are black and white, preferably together. So no surprise that she picked out Niche Bedding’s Palmer line, a modern but versatile bedding ensemble. “You can never go wrong with a crisp, white duvet cover,” says Jan. “And you can always add a pop of color to this set to make it your own.” Jan’s favorite part? “The graphic design on the shams is just delicious.” It brings a new meaning to eating in bed!

John Robshaw Indigo Turban Bedding
2. Anything by John Robshaw: Lisa McDennon is a fan of John Robshaw, and although we chose the Indigo Turban bedding pattern for the photo, all of his patterns are hits for her. “He has a great niche in the market,” explains Lisa. “His patterns have an ethnic, Moroccan and Indian influence that I love. The color and patterns are amazing—subtle yet unique.” Robshaw traveled to India as many young people do, but he fell in love with the textiles, and has decided to recreate them back here in the U.S. And we say thank you!

Giacosa by Designers Guild
3. Giacosa by Designers Guild: Melissa Morgan loves this British textile manufacturer. “They always have on-trend fabrics and wallpapers—and now bedding!” she says. And sticking with our gorgeous to touch theme, she also notes that the Giacosa collection is made from cotton sateen, so it doesn’t just look great, it’s feels great too. Those Brits understand the importance of a warm, comfy bed, we’ve realized…

Yvonne by Wildcat Territory
4. Yvonne by Wildcat Territory: Don’t worry, this bedding won’t attack you, but rather keep you snug in it’s stylish and modern design. Can you guess who picked this one? Yes, it’s Jan Smith again, loving the monochrome look. “This is a simple, classic bedding design that is like a blank canvas for whatever you want your bedroom to be,” Jan explains. “The sky is literally the limit with this ensemble,” she says, as it can be paired with either contemporary or traditional accents for a beautiful result every time.

Gate Ash by Dwell Studios
5. Gate Ash Duvet Set by Dwell Studios: This is a monochrome set too, but in a different way, as it starts with a rich, dusty brown. The bold pattern caught Melissa’s eye: “I absolutely love this pattern! Being monochromatic, you can add any color you wish to the palette.” Again, the LRMID designers are always looking at ways to customize even “off-the-shelf” products for their clients.

LRMID can create custom bedding and furniture
6. Custom Bedding by LRM Interior Design: Okay, this one’s cheating. But we were really pleased with how the custom bed turned out in this room. It wasn’t just the linens that were custom designed and made, the headboard, the curtains and the pillows on the window seat were all made to order. This bedroom won an ASID award, by the way! So when you can’t find the perfect bedding, just call us at LRM Interior Design, and we’ll design something that’s completely unique and just right for your room. Kari Seydewitz loves creating soft furnishings; she’ll be happy to get started right away. We also make custom furniture. It’s the perfect idea for a holiday gift for that person who has everything!

We don’t just design for grown ups here at LRM Interior Design. We like designing great spaces for children to play, learn, grow, imagine and create—after all, that’s the primary joy of being a child! As Lisa’s little ones grow up, we wanted to present some of the coolest items on the market for everyone’s “little angels!”

Livingstones by Stephanie Marin
1. Livingstones by Stephanie Marin: Leave it to the French to invent something so fun that’s also so aesthetically pleasing! “These would be a great addition to any child’s room,” comments Melissa Morgan, LRMID designer. “These are comfortable, but a the same time a major step up from the traditional bean bag.” All of us on the team agree. And we wanted some for the studio, but Lisa hasn’t approved it…yet. We’re also working on introducing an post-lunch naptime. Wish us luck. (read the rest of this post…)
